Devil Cross was my free, weekly independent crossword puzzle from February 2014 until October 2015 before I became a crossword writer for the Washington Post Magazine. I had been inspired by other independent puzzlemakers’ work and wanted to create a fun, modern alternative to mainstream crosswords. What sets self-published puzzles apart from those you might encounter in a mainstream outlet is that the puzzle constructors retain complete control over their work and can publish their crosswords immediately, so the result is a timely, fresh puzzle that solvers can enjoy.
My goal with Devil Cross had been to provide solvers with clever, ambitious, and at times risqué puzzles that you might not normally see in the newspaper. You can still solve most of the puzzles I published here; just click on the links in the Archives sidebar and you’ll find them.
About Me:
I’ve been the weekly crossword constructor for the Washington Post Magazine since December 2015, following the late Merl Reagle. Besides the Post, I’ve had puzzles published in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Fireball Crosswords, Matt Gaffney’s Weekly Crossword Contest, the American Values Club, BuzzFeed, WordPlay Magazine, and the independent collection Twenty Under Thirty. I also write a crossword regularly for Drexel University’s alumni magazine.
I currently live in Philadelphia with my wife Vicki. When I’m not writing puzzles, I sing in a choir called the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia. I was once a graduate student in American History before becoming a full-time puzzlemaker.
