Important Note: This puzzle has been removed from Devil Cross for the time being because it may become a future Washington Post Magazine puzzle. My apologies for the inconvenience. Puzzles #1-61 and #69 are still available to solve.
Short post today since I’m gonna be racing to Escape the Room later on. Gotta get focused! There’s another Sunday-size puzzle on the horizon. This one’s gonna be trickier. I don’t know exactly how tricky. I would recommend reading the puzzle Note, but if you want the extra challenge, ignore it at your own peril!
Enjoy the puzzle. There will be a new one on October 10.
Update, 10/6/15 @ 1:15 pm ET: My original difficulty rating for this puzzle was Spicy. Based on some Twitter chats with several other solvers who said this was quite the toughie, I’ve decided to change this puzzle’s rating to Super-Spicy. Hopefully you’ll still enjoy the taste no matter what the Scoville scale says!
PUZZLE #65: Making the Cut
Difficulty: Spicy
New tricky Sunday-sized crossword up at Devil Cross!

Seems the problem with Sunday sized puzzles is the junk required to construct them. While I’ve liked an incorporated theme here and there I can’t remember the last one I actually enjoyed filling, that didn’t become a nuisance like a guest who overstays his welcome.
By junk I mean crosswordese and propers which a bigger puzzle usually necessitates, but I wondered if you could give a brief summary of your room escape experience. I read the idea sprang from the flash games (which I used to play) and that some solutions can be quite difficult, possibly requiring higher math skills. Thanks.
Seems the “real” escape rooms are the same as the flash ones. Saw Conan do a bit on one which was pretty funny.
Can’t give a detailed summary of the Escape Room since this version of it just started and I don’t want to spoil it, but I will say that the puzzles often involve several little puzzles with different methods to solve them. Some might involve wordplay, or math, or riddles, or even other items in the room, and the only way to do them all in a small window of time is to work together as a team. Our team successfully escaped at the last minute!
My latest crossword is now rated as Super-Spicy. The clues are the same. It’s just more picante than I expected. http://t.co/v4UBeuQxTA
I managed without the instructions, but only after I got the SW theme words and had a notion of the trick.
